What is Tuck-Pointing in Masonry?

March 19, 2018adminNewslettersNo Comments

Brick walls are known for their durability and appealing aesthetics. Oftentimes brick walls will stand the test of time against even the most severe conditions. However, like most masonry works, brick walls will require periodic repair to ensure that they will be functional for years to come. One of the main ways to maintain your brick exterior is by tuck-pointing.

What is Tuck-Pointing?

Tuck-pointing is a masonry process in which the mortar between bricks are removed and replaced with a new layer of mortar. Although bricks are very durable and can last a long time, mortar, on the other hand, has a much shorter useful life. As time passes, the mortar between bricks will wear out and often there will be very visible signs. Mortar is very porous, so moisture of any kind will often cause it to wear out quickly. Therefore, it is very important to have the proper maintenance and upkeep for all of your masonry installations to ensure they stand the test of time.

The main reason for tuck-pointing is to keep your home safe from damage from the always changing and unpredictable weather conditions. By using the proper tuck-pointing services, you will save on building repair and maintenance costs while improving the life and appearance of the building exterior. The primary benefit of tuck-pointing is to resist water penetration by deterring water from creating damage and cause the bricks to come apart. Done correctly, tuck-pointing will strongly influence the mortar joints and the endurance of the brick exterior while improving the overall exterior appearance.

If you think it may be time to see if your exterior may need tuck-pointing maintenance, please call DeLuca & Masonry Construction today at 781-269-9709 and speak to one of our professionals for a free consultation. You could also email us at info@delucamasonry.com
