Advantages & Disadvantages Of Brick Pavers

brick walkwayOne of the more common types of material that is requested for masonry jobs is brick pavers. Projects that brick is requested include walkways, walls, chimneys, fireplaces and even patios. Brick pavers are durable and look great for most projects. Our team will help you pick the perfect material for your project, which may include brick pavers. Below are a few advantages and disadvantages of choosing brick pavers as material for your mason project.

Advantages

  • Color – Bricks are colored naturally with different clay which causes the color to retain better. This is especially helpful when they are exposed to UV rays. A good choice over concrete if you want you project to retain its original color.
  • Longevity – Bricks last for generations, even if they chip or crack over time, and only break in response to stress. Just look at old buildings built in the 1800s that are still standing today, most of the brick used is from that time period and have lasted that long.
  • Maintenance – Since bricks last for such a long time, retain color, and resist staining, there is very little maintenance needed.
  • Eco Friendly – Bricks are often salvaged, cleaned and reused which makes them a great choice for sustainability.

Disadvantages

  • Cost – In comparison to concrete, and because they are so durable, brick is about 20% more expensive.
  • Restricted – Since brick is made naturally, there are only a few color options to choose from as well as only a few sizes to choose from. “Brick” is more of a descriptive of the material as they are usually rectangle in shape.
  • Labor – Bricks are harder to cut and cause any project to take longer because of that. This tends to make labor costs go up.
