A concrete block retaining wall might be just what your yard needs to level out a steep slope or enclose an area for a decorative garden. They’re typically used to hold back part of a yard that would otherwise fall down. They can also be used to carefully step up a difficult slope, eliminate an erosion, and provide distinct outdoor rooms at different and various elevations.
For a retaining wall to do its job properly and stay intact the wall must be correctly constructed by professional masons and properly maintained over time. Here at DeLuca Masonry Construction, LLC. our trained and educated craftsman understands what that includes. With the earth constantly at work pushing on the landscape walls, they must be installed correctly to insure its longevity.
A leading cause of failure among landscape retaining walls is improper drainage and installation of footings or base material. Some walls are also built with weep holes along the base that allow water to run through the wall. Clean these openings with a length of wire or screwdriver to ensure that they stay open. If a drainpipe exists behind your wall, check during the rainy months that the pipe is not plugged.
Choosing a certified contractor is important and will ensure that the job will be done right. If you have questions about building a retaining wall or any other masonry or hardscape project feel free to give us a call or email us. We are here to help.
