Advantages & Disadvantages Of Concrete Pavers

concrete paversIn addition to brick pavers, concrete (or stone) pavers are another material our clients request when requesting a project. These are mostly requested because, unlike brick, they have more color and size options to choose from. They work great for walls, patios, fireplaces, stairs, driveways and more! Below are some advantages and disadvantages of concrete pavers.

Advantages

  • Cost – Concrete is less expensive than brick because of the low cost of raw materials in order to make the concrete.
  • Options – As stated earlier, concrete and stone have a much wider range to choose from in terms of color and size.
  • Innovation – Because concrete has such a low cost to make because of the raw materials, there are always improvements. Newer pavers are being created which makes the design options for concrete pavers seem endless.
  • Installation – Since concrete pavers are easier to cut and uniform, they are easy to install. Which is the main reason why clients request them for projects.

Disadvantages

  • Color – Since concrete pavers get their color unnaturally through color pigments, over time their color will start to fade. This happens a lot for those that are out in the sun from the UV rays.
  • Erosion – Brick pavers tend to chip and crack, but concrete wears more gradually as they erode over time. The smooth finish dissipates which exposes the composite underneath.
  • Longevity – Concrete pavers have a much shorter longevity due to the cost of material and the way they erode over time.
  • Sealing – Because of the delicate nature of concrete pavers, sealant solutions is a good option to prolong their life. However, this will increase the amount of maintenance you need to apply to the pavers and project over time.
